A TERRIFYING new craze involving people dressing up as 'killer clowns' is sweeping across Hampshire - prompting police officials to plead with residents not to take part in the 'frightening trend'.

Hampshire Constabulary have today issued a warning about the so-called 'Creepy Clown' craze, which involves people dressing up as murderous-looking characters in order to scare and intimidate innocent passers-by.

The phenomena started in the United States but has been popularised through social media and has quickly spread across Britain.

Sightings in Andover have been reported on Facebook, with reports of creepy clowns appearing in locations across Andover, as well as in Enham and Tidworth.

Hampshire Constabulary say they have had a number of reports of incidents across the county and are warning those taking part that they could face arrest and a possible criminal record if they are caught.

Superintendent Paul Bartolomeo said: “We don’t want to be killjoys but some of these incidents have been extremely frightening for those involved.

“We would ask people to think about the impact of their actions. What to them is a harmless prank, could be an intimidating and threatening experience to others, especially young children and vulnerable people.

“Also, by taking part in this craze, people could find themselves in a situation which leads to a public order incident. They could be arrested and ultimately end up with a criminal record.

“These incidents are also taking up valuable police time and resources, and will ultimately have an impact on other calls coming into the control room and officers attending other incidents.

“This appears to be a national craze at the moment and we would strongly advise people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight not to be part of it.”

Police are urging anyone who wishes to report a clown incident, or anyone with concerns to call 101.
