THE ambulance service has confirmed that a crash which closed both lanes of eastbound carriageway of the A303 on Saturday afternoon was likely to have been caused by a suspected medical incident at the wheel.

Paramedics were called to the collision between a Nissan and a Subaru on the stretch of the dual carriageway between the A3057 Winchester Road junction and the A3039 Picket Twenty junction at around 3.30pm.

Both lanes of the carriageway were closed for over an hour with one lane reopened shortly before 5pm.

It was initially thought that there had been two collisions after Andover Police tweeted "A303 closed between A3057 and Picket 20 in both directions following two accidents, one caused by rubbernecking" but Hampshire Police have confirmed that just one incident occurred.

The second lane was reopened as officers left the scene just after 6pm.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said that one person was taken to Basingstoke hospital due to a suspected medical incident at the wheel.
