OVER Wallop manager Howard Goddard has heaped praise on his side after they secured a 2-1 win over Andover and District Saturday League title rivals Broughton.

The Wallop boss watched as his team tightened their grip on the Division One crown last Saturday, beating their previously-unbeaten rivals to go five points clear at the top of the table with just two games left.

First-half goals from Tom Cozzi and league top scorer Louis Attrill gave Wallop a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.

But a late goal from Broughton’s Joe Windibank temporarily halted celebrations, as Wallop were forced to ward off their opponents for a nervy final few minutes.

After the match, a delighted Goddard said: “Broughton went into this game unbeaten and we were unbeaten so to get a 2-1 win is really pleasing.

“We really dominated in the first half but credit where credit is due, they were more dominant in the second half.

“Credit to both teams because we both play good football. I can’t fault my boys. They were great.”

Wallop travelled to third placed Kingsclere on Saturday, knowing a win would seal the title, but could only manage a 4-4 draw.

With Broughton beating Sutton Scotney 5-0, Wallop will have to wait until the final day of the season to lift the Division One trophy.

They are due to play Sutton Scotney on the last day of the season, needing just a point to top the table.

Talking about the prospect of lifting the Division One trophy, Goddard added: “It’s more for the boys than it is for me.

“I’ve coached in places like Holland and played for other clubs, but to go back home and do it for your village side is great.

“It’s different for the players.

“They are all aged between 18 and 24 so it will be nice for them to get some success.”
