MAJOR work to reduce the risk of flooding in Andover High Street has started today.
Southern Water has begun its preparatory work on a project to install additional surface water drains between the Guildhall and Shaw's Walk.
The company says this will increase the capacity of the drainage system and help reduce the risk of flooding to local businesses.
Southern Water’s project manager Lee Hooper said: “We’re pleased to be starting work on this important project, which will bring long-term benefits to the area.
"We know there might be some impact during construction and we’re sorry – we’ll be doing all we can to keep this to a minimum.”
Test Valley Borough Council and Andover Town Council both made Southern Water aware of the problems faced by local businesses due to issues with Southern Water’s surface water drains in the High Street.
TVBC's planning policy and transport portfolio holder, councillor Martin Hatley, said: “This is good news for the town.
"Some of the local businesses have had to deal with flooding issues for a long time, so I am pleased to hear that the problem is being rectified.”
