A THIEF "totally" smashed the rear windscreen of a car before stealing a handbag and lobbing it into the River Test, police have reported.
The incident happened yesterday between 1.45pm and 2.30pm at West Down Car Park in Chilbolton.
A thief broke into a car by smashing the rear windscreen.
The offender then stole a handbag, which police say had "items inside".
The thief then dumped the bag in the River Test, where it was found later on in the day.
Police are now appealing for information about the incident.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area or the theft taking place?
"Did you see the bag get discarded into the River Test?
"If you can assist Police, please contact 101 ref: 44170095931.
"Please remember, do not leave anything inside an unattended car.
"Take it with you or leave items at home."
