A BRAVE member of the public was rushed to hospital yesterday after attempting to control a blaze at an Andover industrial estate.

The man, in his 40s, was treated for smoke inhalation at North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke following the fire at the Portway Industrial Estate.

He had entered the unit, on Faraday Park, and used an extinguisher to try and control the blaze, which started shortly before 5.15pm.

Two crews from Andover and one from Whitchurch attended the fire.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said the blaze broke out within the first floor of the building, described as a battery storage area.

It is believed the fire started after a battery charger burst into flames.

Using breathing apparatus, a high pressure hose and tactical ventilation, the crews managed to extinguish the fire shortly before 5.45pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service praised the man's efforts in attempting to control the fire, saying he had done a "great job".
