A SPECIALIST kitchen shop owner is set to retire after nearly 32 years of trading.

Henri Brett opened his first cookware shop at the top of the High Street in October 1985.

Now the Clatford resident is looking to retire and has put his Bridge Street business, Lucy’s Kitchen, up for sale.

Mr Brett said: “I’m over 70, it’s time to retire. The time has come and I hope somebody younger will want to do it.

“I think one enjoys doing the business because one is interested in it.

“We developed a member of staff, who was with me for 20-odd years, and she was a keen cake maker.

“She was saying I should be doing cake decorating and we put in a small order of cake decorating equipment, and that was around 20 years ago. It’s an amazing skill.”

He opened his first shop after the town’s only kitchen shop, Timothy Whites, closed.

Mr Brett acted as the shop fitter and his wife helped decorate.

They worked through the night before the shop opened and did it on a “shoestring” budget.

Over the years the shop moved into the Chantry Centre and onto its current location in Bridge Street.

Mr Brett said: “I don’t have a high staff turnover, and people come in and they know they can get good, safe advice.”

He is now looking forward to travelling all over the world, from the Isle of Wight to China.
