THE headteacher of one of Andover’s biggest secondary schools has stepped down after more than four years in the role.

Ian Coombs has left John Hanson Community school, with former deputy headteacher, Russell Stevens, taking over as acting headteacher while a replacement is found.

Mr Stevens confirmed Mr Coombs left his role to study towards taking a job in further education.

The acting head took on the role after Mr Coombs left at the end of the previous school term and has put his name forward as the school’s next headteacher.

Mr Stevens said: “I have worked with Mr Coombs for three years and I enjoyed the time I worked with him – it was very much a partnership.

“He was someone you worked with and not for, and that’s a very positive experience because it allows you to develop professionally as well.

“Myself and the staff thank him for the time he was here.

“He very much put the school first.”

He added he is looking forward to his interview for the school’s vacant headteacher role.
