FIREFIGHTERS were called to a car blaze on the A303 today - but were beaten to it by a group of quick-thinking soldiers.

Crews were called to the westbound A303 near Thruxton shortly before 11.45am this morning (28 June), to reports of an on-fire Fiat Alhambra.

However, before the crew from Andover could reach the scene, the fire had been extinguished by soldiers from a passing army convoy.

According to a spokesperson at Andover Fire Station, the group had stopped and used on-board fire extinguishers to put out the engine blaze.

"They beat us to it," the spokesperson joked.
