THE M3 northbound has reopened after multiple diesel spills on the motorway caused a 'number of collisions' last night.

The nortbound carriageway of the motorway had been closed last night between Junctions 9 and 4a from around 7pm for emergency services to undertake an 'excessive clean-up'.

However, the carriageway re-opened just after midnight this morning.

Highways England had reported the spills, caused by a vehicle earlier on Sunday, resulted in a 'a number of collisons' with emergency services at the scene including firefighters from Basingstoke and Overton.

A phased re-opening took place with the carriageway from Junctions 8 to 4a opening first before Junction 9 was the last to reopen.

An earlier social media update from Hampshire Constabulary read: "The M3 motorway northbound has now re-opened from junction 8 onwards, and junction 9 will be opened again in due course.

"The road was closed earlier this evening between junctions 9 and 4a due to a fuel spillage and subsequent collisions.

"We would like to thank motorists for their patience while we dealt with these incidents, and wish everyone a safe rest of their journey."
