As we read a little while ago about the nominations for Pride of Andover awards, celebrate the generosity of those involved helping the homeless, continue moving forward with the Andover Vision and the many other great things which go on in our town I’m struck by the ability of people in Andover to work together.

I am reminded of Colossians 4:5-6 which says, “Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.”

I think there are a number of occasions where the finger could be pointed at the church for not having the “right response for everyone” but it seems that working together is a good way of getting off to a good start.

I think we can sometimes get possessive as Christians and think that supporting the oppressed and downtrodden is our job and other people should just leave it to us. Or, the flipside, that we shouldn’t get involved and should leave it to others. But that is when we miss out on making the most of every opportunity. We should be encouraging cooperation which is making projects such as that going on at The Bridge, supporting the homeless, such a success. This is a great example of Christians and non-Christians alike giving their time to support those in need.

As Christians working closer together this might help us to better to reflect the glory of God and to show the true character of Christ in humble service and compassionate relationships. That could be starting something new which we can draw people along into or getting involved with something already going on in our town. I see many great opportunities for developing relationships in our town and hope people continue to work together and celebrate the successes of everyone.
