PLANS to build a 90-home development in Whitchurch have been given the go-ahead despite opposition.

A plan to build the development in Bloswood Lane was decided on by councillors on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s (BDBC) development control committee on Wednesday night.

The application submitted to the borough council by Bewley Homes Plc and Zurich Assurance Ltd detailed plans to build up to 90 houses, with car parking, open space and new access for vehicles and pedestrians in Bloswood Lane in Whitchurch.

Councillor Keith Watts, ward councillor for Whitchurch said he withdrew his original objection to the application following “amendments” to the proposed plans.

In the report to be presented to the meeting, Cllr Watts said: “This site is part of the larger site covered by a policy in the Adopted Local Plan allocating 150 new homes.

“I welcome the integration of the access road currently being constructed, namely Richard Adams Way, as the main thoroughfare through the combined development. I note that a pedestrian and cycle access is proposed to and from Park View; I remain concerned that the option of adapting that for vehicles is not physically closed and will take a close interest in that at the reserved matters stage.”

However, Whitchurch Town Council has objected to the proposals with criticisms which include several objections that they have maintained throughout the process. These include that the development exceeds the town’s requirement for affordable housing, and that local infrastructure is already under pressure from developments that are already in progress.

Part of the statement from the town council in the report reads: “The current expansion of the schools does not take into account the 100 homes at the Winchester Road development, let alone this proposed further large development. Services are insufficient for the current population and will struggle to cope with the developments already approved.
