THE organiser of a new 10k race has spoken of his delight after the race has now completely sold out in its inaugural year.

In only a couple of weeks since the new Whitchurch 10K race was announced, all the 250 available slots for the inaugural run have been taken.

Organiser Martin Dawson said: “It’s been received really well. Now I’m just looking forward to putting it on.

"We’re ready and raring to go, it isn’t too long now until we get started.

“I’m really pleased with the response from the locals, but we’re also bringing new people from outside of Whitchurch to come and visit for the race.

“I’m over the moon that the race has proved to be so popular, and that it’s attracting everyone, not just locals.”

The race, which can be run in either a 10k or 5k format, will be starting at Testbourne Community School and will go in a 5k loop, with those running the full race going around the course twice.

The race was thought up when former Whitchurch resident Martin realised there was not really any long distance races for runners in the Whitchurch area Martin added: “I honestly thought that this would end up just being about 25 people, with me knowing 10 of the people doing it. I had no idea that there would be such a response.

“I had to limit the number to 250, just to see how far it could go, and this is a manageable number, but we might be able to do more if and when the event runs again.”

The race is being held with charity in mind as the nominated cause that the race will be taking place for is Naomi House and Jacksplace, which will receive a portion of the money that is made from the event.

Runners are also being encouraged to raise money through sponsorship.

Local companies have sponsored certain aspects of the race, such as Evingar Trading Estate-based company Albright International, which is sponsoring the medals. Other companies involved include SquareOne, Alton Sports, Revere Sports, and R&W Traffic Management.

Martin said: “It’s good to have them all on board, and there are still more to come, and more are welcome.”
