AN EAST Anton woman has spoken of how a crash victim took his last breath while she was trying to save him.

Viktoria Keys jumped into action after she came across an accident on the A342 between Ludgershall and Weyhill on 7 April.

The St John Ambulance volunteer was stopped by a passer-by when returning home from first aid duty at an event.

She found 30-year-old Jason Plested lying unconscious after he had been struck by a car while walking back from Andover with relatives.

Viktoria said: “I got out of the taxi, got my kit bag out of the boot of the car and saw Jason lying on the floor covered in coats.

“It was a very chaotic scene there that night, there was a lot of screaming from the family and I just began assessing the incident.

“Jason was unresponsive shortly after I got to him and I started CPR. I suppose I just went into autopilot.

“I was talking to Jason when he was taking his last breath.

“I was the last face that he saw.”

She then started chest compressions before handing over to the ambulance service, but her work was not complete as she turned to Jason’s family.

She added: “I had to do triage on his uncle’s hand as he had lacerated his hand from being hit by the car and he had just gone into shock.

“His auntie just broke down. I was hugging her into my shoulder muffled her screaming.

“They wanted to know what was going on with Jason and it became a bit distressful.”

The 42-year-old has been back to the scene since the incident to lay flowers.

She said: “I have spoken to his family and they are very grateful. They just kept asking me ‘did he die alone’? and I reassured them but I just wish there was more I could have done.

“They are just so devastated. My heart goes out to them and they are always in my thoughts and in my heart.”

Viktoria said the effort to save Jason was not a lone task as she was supported by members of the public, police and the ambulance service, adding: “Everyone was fantastic”.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101.
