TWO sisters have been left angered and upset after they rescued a duckling which had been thrown off of a bridge by a ‘laughing teenager’.

Charlie and Natasha Quarrier, from Andover, witnessed the attack on the animal as they were walking by The Range on Northern Avenue Retail Park on Wednesday last week.

The women say that the teenager hurled the duckling off the bridge by the shop, but it was thrown with such force that the bird was unable to land upright in the water, hitting the surface on its side and it became injured.

Natasha, 26, said: “He threw it into the water and then ran off laughing, and I was panicking as we really love animals and didn’t want it to die – it was really upsetting.

“Charlie then went into the water to get it as we saw it had been badly hurt on its left side and couldn’t flip over.”

The pair called the RSPCA but the animal welfare charity was unable to get to the scene for a few hours and the sisters decided that the bird needed urgent attention.

They rushed it to Pets at Home where the staff and the store’s in-house vet took care of the animal.

Charlie, 23, said: “The people at Pets at Home were very friendly and did everything they could to help.

“We gave them the duck and they gave us a piece of paper to sign and they said they couldn’t understand why anyone could be so cruel either.”

It was decided that the animal would be kept overnight as it was not able to stand properly, but the sisters were contacted the following day and were told that he was “doing well”.

“It was just shocking, we don’t know why anyone would do this,” Natasha added.

The duck is now at Wiltshire Wildlife Sanctuary after Pets at Home decided the animal would be able to recuperate there until it was healed.
