A HIGH street butchers was due to undergo a food hygiene inspection this week following a warning in July that major improvements were necessary.

Inspectors gave Turners Butchers, in High Street, Overton, a 1 grade for its food hygiene rating on July 31, but business owner Kevin Smith said this was due to building works going on when the visit was made by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

Mr Smith said: “It is 100 per cent going to be better [this time].

“When the council were in I was in mid-flow of building starting. That’s all been finished now.”

Food hygiene ratings are given in range of 0, as the lowest, up to 5, as highest.

When a request to see the full hygiene report was made to the borough council, The Advertiser was told it could not be released due to “ongoing legal investigation”.

A borough council spokesperson said: “The environmental health team is working with the business to ensure that the deficiencies that we found at the time of the inspection are rectified.

“However, standards have improved since the inspection and this has allowed the business to continue serving food.”
