Parish elections on hold

TOWN councillors in Tidworth have almost six more years to knuckle down after it was revealed their term of office is likely to last until 2013.

Parish councils across Wiltshire will also run until the new date.

The reason is the creation of the new unitary authority in Wiltshire and the need to keep costs down.

Traditionally parish elections take place at the same time as district council elections, to help reduce costs, but as these will no longer be held the parish and town councils will now be scheduled to take place at the same time as unitary elections in 2013.

County councillor Mark Connolly, said: "The government has agreed that the elections for the unitary authority will be in 2009.

"Before then there will be an interim cabinet of 17 which will include eight from the four district councils.

"Town and parish councils will continue until 2013."

The boundary commission is due to start work in January drawing up 98 single member wards - likely to give Tidworth and Ludgershall one member each with another member for the Collingbournes and neighbouring villages.
