Police appeal for information about car key thefts

11:21am Tuesday 6th May 2008

DETECTIVES are investigating a spate of car key thefts in north Hampshire.

A car was stolen from the driveway of a house in Silchester Road, Tadley, after burglars broke into the house and helped themselves to the keys.

The silver Volkswagen Golf was taken in the early hours of Saturday, April 26. A television was also stolen.

On the same night, two sets of car keys were stolen from a house in Strawberry Fields, in Bramley, after burglars gained entry through the front door.

However, neither of the cars were taken.

Officers believe these two incidents are linked and are appealing for information.

Anyone with information should contact Detective Constable John Hood, at Basingstoke police station, on 0845 045 4545 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Hampshire Constabulary offers the following Safer Homes advice: Never leave a key under a doormat or on a string through the letterbox - it's the first place any burglar will look, hide financial documents and keys - if someone does break in, you don't want them to also steal from your bank account or take your car, make sure you secure all your doors and windows every time you leave the house, deadlock your doors with the key - don't just lift the handle, make use of all door and window locks fitted in your home, consider getting a letter box deflector Keep your car keys away from the front door and store them somewhere safe and keep handbags out of sight.
