A TALENTED schoolboy from Basingstoke will follow in the footballing footsteps of former England striker Alan Shearer when he travels to Sweden this summer.
Mark Davenport, of Winklebury Way, Winklebury, will take on the best young footballers in the world in the Gothia World Youth Cup, in Gothenburg, Sweden, in July, just as the former Newcastle United player did.
The 12-year-old, who will play for regional side Hampshire Elite, will also follow the example of current Premier League players such as West Ham United's Kieron Dyer and Liverpool's Xavi Alonso in competing in the tournament.
More than 1,500 teams are expected to take part in the six-day competition, starting on July 13, all in front of scouts from professional clubs around the world.
The youngster, who goes to Fort Hill Community School, in Kenilworth Road, Winklebury, said: "I am nervous because I have no idea how good the opposition will be, but I am also looking forward to it because it will be a great experience."
Mark's mother, Shirley Davenport, saw an advert for the Hampshire Elite team in The Gazette. After a trial, her son secured his place in the team.
"He is constantly going on about it, and is always on the official website," said his proud mum.
"We have had to teach him the national anthem in preparation for the opening ceremony."
The youngster plays as a defender for his school team and for Winklebury Wizards Youth FC.
Mark is looking for sponsorship to help cover the cost of the football trip.
