TAG's sparkling rugby

OVERTON Rugby Club played host to 30 schools bringing around 500 children from north Hampshire for the annual TAG rugby festival.

Organised by Roger Filbey, a former schools liaison officer and beat officer, the festival gives police officers and PCSOs the chance to interact with children and their parents in a relaxed atmosphere.

Vice-chairman Paul Cavanagh said: "This year we have run sessions in 32 out of 46 primary schools in the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council catchment area with an additional eight schemes run by PCSOs.

"This has benefited 1478 children, mostly within normal school time."

In Hampshire, TAG rugby is referred to as sparkling rugby and has been running for 13 years.

The festival is a joint initiative between Basingstoke schools sports partnership, Overton Rugby Club and Hampshire Constabulary.

Thursday saw the year 5/6 age groups competing with the final contested between Overton and Oakley, where Overton narrowly beat Oakley by seven tries to five, in a match that could have been won by either team.

The year three and four final on Friday (6) saw Sherborne House beating Oakley by seven tries to four.

The winning team was invited to watch London Irish's first home game.
