Rotary's new president

Andover Rotary Club held its inaugural meeting at the Quality Hotel recently with John Ray handing over the presidency to Gordon Howard.

Mr Ray looked back on a successful year. Over £15,000 had been raised from fundraising events for local charities including the Countess of Brecknock Hospice, Andover Young Carers, Naomi House, Age Concern and Shopmobility. The club has also been active on the international front with donations given to Aquaboxes and Shelterboxes, for use in worldwide disasters.

Mr Howard said in the coming year he wished to grow the club slowly and to continue to attract new members' particularly younger members still in business. He wanted to continue to promote service projects that were sustainable. The club would take forward Rotary International's president's project Make Dreams Real' to help cut infant mortality. It would also support Rotary Foundation and the Bill Gates challenge of rotary to raise $100m to finish the polio eradication programme.

He wound up by reminding the club members: "They should enjoy giving service and enjoy each others company and in doing so have a successful Rotary year together'.
