Fourth repair job on dodgy paving

WORKMEN arrived to inspect some dodgy paving in George Yard the day after the problem was highlighted by the Andover Advertiser.

The paving has been repaired on no less than three occasions but it has got so bad in recent weeks that pedestrians have to tread warily to avoid dangerously loose paving slabs.

Only a few weeks ago Lionel Blair visited Andover to highlight problems like dodgy pavements that present a danger to older people.

Cllr Mel Kendal, executive member for environment at Hampshire County Council, said the problem was due to sand being lost between the slabs, probably caused by rain and surface water run-off, combined with the fact that the footpath is also used by vehicles accessing businesses.

He added: "We are currently looking at ways to rectify the problem satisfactorily with as little disruption to businesses as possible."

However, businesses in George Yard said the real problem rested with the workmanship and not businesses using their cars.

On Saturday workmen turned up and replaced two slabs with asphalt, others were smashed so that they do not rock about as much, and three railings were erected around the worst affected area outside The Paper Shop.
