OVER 1,000 people braved awful weather at Thruxton Race Circuit on Saturday night to see one of the south’s biggest firework displays.
The event, organised jointly by Andover Rotary Club and the Andover Round Table, featured a funfair and a light display by truckers.
Close to 1,700 people visited the event, although few tickets were sold on the night probably due to torrential rain falling from Saturday afternoon well into the evening.
David Moulton, the chairman of the organising committee, said that even though the event fell short in terms of raising money for local charities, it was still successful in bringing people together.
He said: “Our pre-sales of tickets were pretty good and in line with previous years, but when the day came the weather predictions were not good and unfortunately they were correct.
“The weather was absolutely appalling which obviously was a bit of a shame as we wanted to raise a bit of money. But we don’t run it solely as a fundraising event because we feel an obligation to the people of the Andover area to put on a good event that brings the community together, and we succeeded on that front.
“We are a bit disappointed but we have to remember we have had very good crowds for previous events that have raised a lot of cash.”
