THE contest for the new Speaker of the House of Commons takes place on Monday and local contender Sir George Young is making all the running with the bookies today.
Earlier this week it would have been possible to get odds as long as 10 to one on the Andover MP on line but things have changed radically over the past 48 hours.
William Hill was only offering 5-2 against at lunchtime today while Ladbrokes were still giving as much as 4 to one on line.
Sir George has leap-frogged Kent MP Anne Widdecombe in the odds and is now on a par with the two other main contenders, fellow Conservative, John Bercow and Margaret Beckett, the ex-foreign secretary, in the eyes of the bookies.
