SIR George Young was in second place after the first ballot of MPs who were voting to decide the next speaker of the House of Commons.
The result of the first ballot was declared just after 5pm.
Leading the field was young favourite John Bercow with 179 votes to Sir George’s 112 with former foreign secretary Margaret Beckett third on 74.
Alan Hazelhurst and Alan Beith were the only other candidates to poll more than 50 votes.
BBC political correspondent James Landale, said: “Sir George Young won a few more votes a a result of his performance in the debate.”
