THE stunning new Chapel Arts in St Mary’s churchyard was formally opened by the Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Ian Hibberd.
What was a run down and neglected building, out of use for more than 50 years, has been turned into one of the jewels in Andover’s arts provision along with The Lights, Andover College and Andover Museum.
Chapel Arts, which will provide studio space for up to three artists, was the brainchild of Madeline Edmonds.
Since then, the Test Valley Arts Foundation has championed the idea of developing the redundant building into a dedicated arts studio and exhibition space for the benefit of artists and the community of Andover. Refurbishment of the building started in June and Chapel Arts is now complete.
Michael Widén, Test Valley Arts Foundation development officer, said: “The transformation of this space, which has not been in use for over 50 years, is spectacular.” The project has been sponsored by the Arts Council, Hampshire County Council, Test Valley Borough Council, The Headley Trust, Hampshire Police Authority, Test Valley Arts Foundation, Twinings and Test Housing David Dixon, lead artist and programme inventor and co-ordinator, said: “Over the next 12 months I will be recruiting other artists to fill the gaps in the studio and embark on a blistering outreach programme to invigorate the local community.”
The building itself has been turned into a light and airy space graced by windows featuring artwork by students at Andover College.
