TARCA (The Anton River Conservation Association) has recently been hard at work helping wildlife in the local areas once again – but this time with some help from Test Valley councillors Caroline Nokes and deputy mayor Chris Lynn.
The group was spawned from interest in The River Anton Enhancement Scheme, a partnership between Test Valley Borough Council, The Environment Agency, and Hampshire and IoW Wildlife Trust to improve the river corridor for wildlife and people.
Spokesman Graeme Davis said: “The task at hand this time round was to clear a dew pond at Anton Lakes which had become overgrown.
“The pond is very good for dragonflies and newts, and hopefully these species will thrive now that the pond has been opened up once again.
“Volunteers also helped to fell trees along the River Anton allowing more light through to the river bed. This will create the right conditions for a host of invertebrates that are extremely valuable for the health of the river ecosystem.”
If you wish to volunteer or want information on the new group contact 01264 368811 or 07722 267138, email antonriver@ live.com or find the group on its Facebook page by searching TARCA The Anton River Conservation Association.
TARCA events will also be published in TVBC’s diary which can be found at testvalley.gov.uk as well as on the group’s Facebook page.
l TARCA’s next event will be Sunday 21 February – watercress bed management at Anton Lakes.
