THREE Andover students are celebrating after coming third in a national public speaking competition.
Bryony Cuff, Sam Taylor and Jake Thurman from John Hanson Community School delighted judges in the grand final of Rotary Youth Speaks 2010.
Their presentation – Is Honesty the Best Policy – had the audience at Stratford Upon Avon High School in stitches on Saturday.
The team, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Andover, were up against six other groups from across the country who also made it through local and regional heats.
The team’s presentation covered a variety of topics including the existence of Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy as well as that tricky question ‘does my bum look big in this?’ Teachers Charlotte Handley and Rebecca Collins, who trained the team, said they were very proud.
“All three demonstrated a continuing flair for public speaking that not only astounded the judges, but their teachers as well,” said Miss Handley.
Ms Collins added: “Although very nervous, they were extremely professional in their delivery.
“We are extremely proud of their achievement and hope for even greater ones next year.”
Rotary president David Fowler, who presented the trophies, said: “These youngsters have shown how honourable, talented and inquisitive young people are.”
