DOGS Trust says microchipping now accounts for a third of all lost dogs that are identified and successfully returned.
According to the most recent Dogs Trust Stray Dog Survey the microchip is responsible for 32 per cent of dog returns - but the overall number of strays has increased since 199 when the chips only accounted for seven per cent of returns.
Dogs Trust, which is a charity, charges £10 at the Dogs Trust rehoming centre at Newton Tony.
