Dogged determination succeeds
Happy ending to a successful course
Happy ending to a successful course

ANDOVER Advertiser readers who showed dogged determination by attending a special training course should now be able to avoid picking up ASBOs for their canine pets.

Howard Kirby, of Mullenscote Dog Training School was inundated with calls from owners of teenage' dogs when the Advertiser ran a story offering them a special course at a reduced price to solve their doggy problems.

It resulted in Howard running three courses a week for owners. He expected maybe half a dozen responses and had to cope with nearly 60!

Now the six week course is complete, participants have been asking Howard for a follow-up and this is being organised for September. He will contact owners direct and there are no places at present for new participants although he will organise a fresh series of courses for Advertiser readers at a later date.

"It was tremendous fun for all involved as well as being educational and the course focused on the skills of the handler, because it's often when these are lacking that dogs develop behavioural problems," said Howard.

"Collaborative sharing of ideas and common issues through classroom workshops was a real benefit and handlers showed a huge change towards a positive, confident approach to handling their dogs.

"We also introduced the canine pupils to Lottie the pig and the resident geese, Ferdie and his girls, so they would learn how to interact with other animal species.

"I was especially pleased that Test Valley Dog Warden Rod Mason attended on three different nights to give a presentation on The Duties of the Dog Warden' and award certificates to those who completed the course.

"We are so lucky to have Rod as dog warden becasue he is totally supportive of dogs and aware of the needs and challenges that dog owners face.

"Training, education and facilities will always be essential in order to ensure that dog owners are well educated in the care and requirements of responsible dog ownership and I look forward to working with Rod again to promote this."
