MERITYRE in Andover joined forces with Michelin to supply specialist off-road tyres to an intrepid team of four young adventurers for a journey of a lifetime from Alexandria to Cape Town.
Driving a Land Rover Defender, the team from Newcastle and Leeds universities is preparing to set off on 16 June and plans to arrive in Cape Town by 23 September, having driven through hostile terrain including the Nubian and Kalahari deserts.
During the journey the team members are also planning to run 645km across the Kalahari Desert in Botswana - a world first - using the Land Rover as a back up vehicle.
The team is made up of twin brothers Toby and Harry Mossop, aged 20, Alexander Budge, aged 21, and Robert Hemms, also aged 21.
They aim to raise more than £30,000 for the charities Help for Heroes and Tusk Trust.
Mr Jolyon Pope, managing director of Merityre, said: "Merityre offered to approach Michelin on behalf of the team, who agreed to supply the crew with a complete set of Michelin 235/85R16 120Q 4x4 O/R XZL tyres free of charge, plus two spares.
"We are delighted to be in a position to lend our support to this worthy cause."
Merityre is a family run business, which was established in 1963 and operates from headquarters in Andover. It's one of the leading independent fast-fit specialists in the UK employing a team of highly trained staff using the latest specialists equipment.
