Yakanaka - fair trade's jewel in the crown
TWO Hampshire businesswomen are working together to supply Fair Trade jewellery which helps women in one of the world's most dangerous countries.
Formed two years ago by Whitchurch resident Katy Maxwell, Yakanaka employs 12 Zimbabwean women who use beads made from locally sourced and sustainable materials to make bracelets, bangles, necklaces and earrings.
An accredited fair trade jewellery company, it already stocks 40 shops and counts Amnesty International among its customers, and recently created a new bespoke collection for St Mary Bourne-based firm Basket Case, run by Jane Livesey.
With inflation figures estimated at around 10,000 per cent, the average wage in Zimbabwe is just $1 a month, while the women who create the jewellery are paid by the piece and earn an average of $1 a day.
One has managed to build a two-room house after being kicked out by her husband.
To find out more about the companies log on to www.yakanaka.com or alternatively www.basketcase.com.
