Andover Country Market

ON the last day of February, the Andover Country Market said goodbye to the Guildhall, home for over 40 years.

On 7 March it re-appeared as a stall in the High Street, alongside our plants stall.

The following seven weeks were a considerable learning curve - putting up and taking down awnings, erecting tables and covering them in high winds and downpours - even snow.

On Good Friday all three were experienced!

There's been great support from suppliers, bakers and many loyal customers as well as finding many new customers from passing trade, so being evicted has had some advantages!

The plant stall is already well established as an outside stall and continues to offer locally-grown plants, many not found in garden centres.

While it's still too cool for bedding plants, the first broad bean plants have appeared.

During the next monthhopefullly more vegetable plants will appear including cabbage and lettuce, perhaps tomatoes for the cold greenhouse in early May followed by cucumbers, courgettes and marrows later, frosts permitting.

New bakers have introduced some appetising new ranges - French lemon tart, various sponges (iced, chocolate, coffee and walnut) spiced apple and almond flan.

Producers have also responded to the passing trade with small packs of biscuits and scones, both sweet and savoury, perhaps well suited to a busy lunch or coffee break.

The free range eggs on offer have two new additions - goose eggs (for a rich, luxury omelette) and meringues made, of course, from those free-range eggs.

The good traditional range of local, homemade preserves includes marmalade, chutney and jam.

Unfortunately, local honey is in short supply and may remain so, as the bees are having a bad time.

Hand-made craft items and cards are always popular. Producers are willing to make personalised items to order, for special occasions.

Even at this time of year, some fresh locally grown vegetables are available.

Spinach, leaks and purple sprouting are on offer together with the first rhubarb of the year.
