Amport Village News
Caroline Unwin writes:
THE annual parish meeting for Amport was attended by a number of members of the public.
Among the speakers Brian Nolan, as Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, gave a report on the year's crime, followed by Pc Bill Williams.
The main problem recently has been the theft of fuel oil from household tanks, which is known to have happened four times in Amport and also in Thruxton and Kimpton.
It is believed that there is an oil tanker, possibly red, which is going round to houses which have a recently had delivery and pumping the oil out again.
Anyone seeing anything suspicious is asked to report it to the police immediately. There had been six other thefts in the village, but no burglaries.
The chairman's report: The meeting continued with the chairman giving his report on the past year's achievements, notably the completion of the Village Design Statement.
Tesco warehouse development: The chairman said that the planning department public meeting to discuss the Tesco warehouse would now take place on 2 or 9 June.
Cllr Pat West, who was also present, mentioned that the developers have still not satisfied Hampshire County Council on a number of points regarding traffic management.
One issue which could cause real health and hygiene problems is that of lorries parking in local lay-bys where there are no facilities, while awaiting their planned arrival time at the distribution centre.
Pc Williams also pointed out the chaos which could be caused by an accident on the A303 when all traffic would have to be diverted through Andover or the surrounding villages.
The chairman said that everybody must keep up the attack if the whole of the Andover area is not to be permanently affected by this massive development.
The Green: A RoSPA inspection of the play equipment is due shortly but it was not expected that there would be any problems. The ditch beside The Green needs to be dug out again and the county council would be contacted to see if they would be able to do this since there are cables underneath.
The brass plaque beside the tree dedicated to Dick and Peggy Aubertin has now been lacquered so that it will no longer need to be polished.
Weyhill play area: The new play area for Fairways and Michaelmas Drove, for which land has recently been made available, now requires an acceptable plan to be drawn up, in consultation with Test Valley Borough Council, in order to acquire suitable play equipment for children in the teenage and pre-teen groups.
Amport website: The chairman thanked David Preston for all his work on the village website which is apparently receiving about 300 hits per month.
Parish boundaries: The chairman announced that they had received a questionnaire regarding the existing parish boundaries and asking for ideas on possible changes.
When this subject was raised a few years ago, it was felt that it would be more sensible for the areas of Quarley and Cholderton, which currently come into Amport parish, to become part of their own respective villages.
In addition the area of the parish north of the A303 consisting of Fairways, Michaelmas Drove and Dauntsey Lane etc, might be better catered for by becoming part of Penton parish. This will all be discussed and consulted on in the coming months.
