THE ashes of a beloved pet dog were stolen from the property of a vulnerable pensioner while she slept - police have confirmed.

Officers say the burglary took place at a residential property in Mylen Road sometime between 10pm on Wednesday 19 April and 6.30am on Thursday 20 April.

Police say a small wooden box, containing the ashes of a family pet, was stolen during the raid.

The family of the victim say their 83-year-old relative, who suffers from dementia, was asleep in the house at the time.

A family member, who asked not to be named, said the ashes "meant everything to her".

They have asked members of the public to look out for a small mahogany box, with the word "Maddie" on the top.

Police have arrested a 42-year-old man from Andover on suspicion of burglary.

He has been released but remains under investigation as enquiries continue.
