A Champagne thief has been given a suspended sentence after admitting to stealing six bottles on Christmas Day.

Elliott James Henderson, of Heath Vale, pleaded guilty to the theft valued at £213.72 from Marks and Spencer at Buck Filling Station.

The 34-year-old also admitted to stealing batteries, toothbrushes and razors worth nearly £300 from Tesco on River Way in February and alcohol valued at £72 from Marks and Spencer in High Street in January.

He also admitted to committing these offences while serving sentences for previous offences.

Henderson was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, when he appeared in Basingstoke Magistrates' Court recently because of his history of similar offences.

He was also ordered to take part in a drug rehabilitation programme.
