PUPILS from Rookwood School thrilled audiences with their production of The Wizard of Oz, entertaining hundreds of audience members over three shows at The Lights.

There were a number of scenery changes throughout each show, from Gale Farm and the Yellow Brick Road to the dark forest and the Wicked Witch of the West’s castle.

All of the sets were made in school by pupils and members of staff while the costumes were also made by staff, present and past.

Heather Blackmore, senior school drama teacher, said: “I am so proud of every single pupil who took part in The Wizard of Oz, be it acting on the stage, playing in the band or organising costumes, make-up and scenery backstage. The standard of acting, dancing and singing was extremely high and many audience members compared the play to that of a West End production, which is a huge compliment. ”

The opening show brought a number of local groups together to watch a special matinee production.

Among those invited were pupils from Kimpton, Thruxton and Fyfield Church of England School and Anton Junior School, Councillor Iris Andersen, Andover Parkinson’s Support Group and the school governors.

Headteacher Anthony Kirk-Burgess added: “Congratulations to everyone involved in this phenomenal production of The Wizard of Oz. It was a privilege to watch, not one, but two performances and my heartfelt congratulations go to all of the cast, crew, staff and volunteers.”
