MORE than 600 students celebrated International Women’s Day with an introduction to the world of digital industries at The Lights on Thursday last week.

Andover College set up the inaugural Women into Digital Industries day, hailed as a phenomenal success, to show Andover pupils aged 13 and 14-years-old how a career path in technology is possible across a range of sectors.

Animation, virtual reality and robotics were all available for a hands-on experience, and female speakers from across the country shared their personal experience and advice of the digital sector.

Andover College digital marketing officer Meg Bullock said: “Our first Women into Digital Industries event was a phenomenal success. The venue was buzzing with energy all day and it was so rewarding to expose students to the scope of digital careers available now and in the future in the UK’s fastest growing industry.

“There is a shortage of females in technological sectors today, however by showcasing some of the industry’s leading ladies we’re confident young women in our community will engage, create and learn the vibrant digital skills for future successes.”

Andover College currently works with its own students through its Digital Futures initiative, which aims to equip them with the digital skills required by businesses and employers to elevate their career prospects.

Lana Suhova, a former Andover College student and creator of Dalry Rose Digital, said: “I never imagined a love of blogging and social media could turn into a business for me.

“Over the years I’ve had opportunities to work with international brands including Topshop and Harrods through my online presence so my advice to young women is use the digital tools around you to your advantage and have fun, because you never know where a creative passion could take you.”
