PEOPLE go into hospital to get better not to catch a superbug.

That is the message from Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust, Mr Martin Wakeley, who has been in post for just four months.

The trust has been getting excellent results in its battle against MRSA and is now making real headway against Clostr-idium Difficile.

Mr Wakeley said: "One of the things I take extremely seriously is that people come into hospital to get better, they don't come to hospital to catch something."

He has regular meetings with the infection control team and walks the hospitals every day to make sure things are being done properly. "We are absolutely committed to being the best in the country as regards hospital acquired infection."

The results against MRSA have already been good and he is hoping to further reduce the risk of catching MRSA by 80 per cent.

The trust has spent £500,000 in improving the environment and levels of Clostridium Difficile are lower now than they were this time last year.

He plans to ensure that levels are still lower this time next year.
