HAMPSHIRE Primary Care Trust (PCT) wants to add another year to the lives of people in the county by 2012.

In its recently published Healthy Horizons, the PCT sets out the plan for healthcare over the next five to 10 years.

The PCT wants to ensure that people live longer and healthier lives, and will be encouraging healthier lifestyle choices, reducing health inequalities, targeting long term conditions and improving the quality and efficiency of local services.

On average Hampshire is already a healthier place to live, with men and women living longer in Hampshire than in England as a whole, but the PCT is hoping to see the average life expectancy increased even further, by adding another year.

To achieve this it is targeting the lifestyles of Hampshire people. It will be investing in programmes to help people to quit smoking, eat healthier, drink less alcohol and exercise more.

This is not only to increase life expectancy, but to also reduce the amount of related diseases.

Consultations with local voluntary groups, youth action groups and carers are being held all over the county, giving them a chance to express their thoughts on the future of health services.

Richard Samuel, Hampshire PCT's director of corporate affairs, is also asking for residents' suggestions: "Now the PCT has published Healthy Horizons, we would like to hear what you think about our proposals. We would like to know if you agree with our future plans and what would you change."
