IN his letter (9/5/08) Wellum House dentist Anthony Lynn criticised Ms Reichlin, saying: Anyone who . . . states that the hexafluorosilicic acid used for today's water is not natural fluoride, shows an abysmal lack of knowledge of even the simplest chemistry'.
He then urges the editor to be more circumspect in his choice of letters, saying: I suggest the space in the Advertiser is used for quality copy rather than pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo'.
Interestingly, Ms Reichlin was quoting Joel Kauffman PhD Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, University of the Sciences, Philadelphia.

I would like to move on to other worrying aspects of Mr Lynn's letter. For example, he persuades us to go to the British Fluoridation Society's (BFS) website as a source of unbiased information.
However, this extract from a document by Douglas Cross, BSc, CBiol, MIBiol, EurProBiol, entitled Human Rights, Civil Liberties and Water Fluoridation', suggests the BFS is far from unbiased.
. . . the ambition of the Government's own pro-fluoridation propaganda organisation, British Fluoridation Society (BFS) to "exert continuous pressure on Government nationally and locally and demand fluoridation" (BFS Mission Statement, 1985) by infiltrating the health sector could be viewed as a violation of Article 3, since the result of any such action will inevitably result in an extremely prejudicial medical result for some individuals'.
Douglas Cross is an Environmental Analyst and Forensic Ecologist and was for six years a member of the DoH's Committee on Toxicity.
There can be no debate on fluoridation without mentioning the undisputed fact that it causes dental fluorosis.
The condition progresses from white specks to crumbling, ugly brown-stained teeth, which dentists refuse to treat on the NHS.
It is incurable and can only be disguised by expensive and lifelong private treatment, beyond the reach of most poor families. (So much for equalising dental health between rich and poor!)
The high rate of fluorosis in fluoridated areas ensures an ongoing and lucrative income for dentists, so financial self-interest cannot be entirely ruled out.
Should this be taken into consideration, when dentists defend so passionately something universally acknowledged as a violation of medical ethics and human rights?
The American Dental Association has announced officially that fluoridated water should not be given to infants or used to make up baby formula.
This fact alone makes community fluoridation indefensible. We should never forget that 94 per cent of the world's population, including continental Europe, have refused this policy, and that according to internationally renowned experts and 16 Nobel Prize winners, it is unsafe, unproven, ineffective, unethical, costly and open to legal challenge.
