Jesters and jugglers wow holiday crowds
Long and the short of it: Mark Sampson, aged five, meets John Caudrey from Larger than Life at Hurstbourne Priors May Fair.
Long and the short of it: Mark Sampson, aged five, meets John Caudrey from Larger than Life at Hurstbourne Priors May Fair.

HURSTBOURNE Priors May Fair was hailed a huge success and the event was estimated to have raised over £8,000 for local causes.

The Bank Holiday Monday event, which was opened by Lady Aurelia Young, raised cash for St Andrew's Church, Hurstbourne Priors, the village hall and the recreation ground in Hurstbourne Priors.

The weather looked set to dampen spirits, but the rain cleared up by around midday and hundreds of people attended.

One of the organisers Brian Mehaffey said: "It was very successful although it looked terrible when we saw the rain pouring down in the morning.

"There was face painting, bric a brac, a tombola, coconut shy and a pony and cart ride which was very popular.

Meanwhile, Upper Clatford and Anna Valley May Fayre boasted an attendance of over 1,000 people and managed to raise over £5,000 for local clubs and societies.

The theme for the year was the circus.

A duck race, raft race and a special appearance from Jonathan the Jester were just some of the things enjoyed by the crowds who attended.

Sir George Young was one of the attendees who commented on the number of people who arrived.

Organiser Tara Scougall said: "It really was very busy, if very muddy underfoot after all the rain.

"The whole village rallied together - some people have done so for years."
