WHITCHURCH town councillors elected Cllr Peter Williams as the new mayor during the Whitchurch annual town council meeting on Monday.
He was nominated by Cllr Ken Clark, in one of his final acts as a councillor for the town before he and his wife Irene retired.
Mr Williams replaced Cllr Steve Robbins at the mayor making ceremony and chose his deputy as Cllr Vince Bradbury.
Taking up his new appointment Mr Williams said: "I'd like to thank you all for putting your trust in me.
"I will try and do my best and uphold the standards that we are used to here."
Speaking afterwards Mr Williams and his wife were enthusiastic about the new appointment and the area.

"We moved to the area in 1982.
"I taught at Testbourne and my wife taught at Longparish," he said.
"In 1988 we wanted to move, but we couldn't find a better place, so we just moved across the road, and all the local kids and mums helped us - that's how nice the community is. We like to be part of this town.
"Whitchurch has a lot to offer people and we have a lot to offer it."
Mr Williams said he is already very involved in the area and has attended meetings about the station parking, and acted as an observer on the committee for the carnival.
He has pledged to donate all the money he receives for expenses to charity, but has not yet decided who the benefactors will be.
