TWO choirs and a packed congregations gathered at St Thomas' Church in Charlton to mark the exact date 100 years ago when the church opened its doors for worship.
To cement the sense of occasion the congregation sang the same hymns as the 1908 service beginning with All people that on Earth do Dwell'.
The event included local MP Sir George Young and several councillors.
"Rev Robin Nash who looked after this church in the 1980s was also present, which was great," said Rev Jill Bentall, who looks after St Thomas' Church today.
"A number of people turned up especially to see him."
Two choirs - The Harmonium Singers and The Euphoria Gospel Singers - entertained with a variety of pieces that looked backwards as well as to the future.
The church itself is one of the most modern in the area and replaced a Victorian church built in Foxcotte which itself replaced a medieval one.
The medieval church builders preferred Foxcotte as a site for the area's church because the Charlton area was considered too boggy.
