BOROUGH chiefs unanimously approved an action plan for boosting Test Valley’s economy this month.

Test Valley Borough Council’s cabinet gave the greenlight to its Economic Development Strategy’s action plan which includes aims to maximise both Andover and Romsey’s town centres, explore the development of a Cultural Quarter in Andover and work to rejuvenate the Walworth Business Park.

The borough’s economic plan was approved by full council in February, and the action plan was approved on 14 March on how the strategy will push forward.

Economic development and tourism portfolio holder Councillor David Drew said: “Much thought has been given to its action plan.

“This action plan differs to many local authority economic development plans in its scope and ambition. It is not “business as usual” but instead focusses on changes which over time will deliver significant economic development benefit to Test Valley’s economy and therefore its community.

“We want to ensure our town centres remain attractive and vibrant to residents and visitors who in turn will support existing and new businesses and forms of economic activity.”

Public speakers at the meeting expressed a wish in light of the development of a cultural quarter to see the development of a science, engineering and technology centre that both residents and tourists can visit, alongside features such as an ice skating rink, a multi-purpose indoor venue for dancing, music festivals and functions.

In the action plan target of rejuvenating town centres, the plan aims to work with Andover Vision, and the Business Improvement District Steering Group to “enable programmes of environmental enhancement and extension of events and activities to improve the offer of our town centres.”

Promoting and strengthening tourism was also an action area including measures to boost Test Valley’s message on the Visit Hampshire tourism website.
