FANS of the simple spud were out in force last weekend for Hampshire Potato Day.
More than 1,200 people descended on Testbourne Community Centre in Micheldever Road, Whitchurch, on Saturday and Sunday to view and buy a wide array of potato varieties.
However, organiser Phil Cooper said that attendance and the number of potato varieties were considerably down on last year, primarily because of bad weather.
He said: “Last year was a very bad year for potato-growers. The weather meant that many crops were ruined and a lot of them rotted in the ground.
“Last year, we had 150 varieties of potatoes and this year we have closer to 100.
“Some of them sold out, which doesn’t usually happen and we don’t like to sell out. It just proves how bad last year was.”
Mr Cooper said there was still plenty to do at the 15 th such potato day, with children’s activities including potato-printing, tasty treats cooked on site and lots of stall holders selling garden-related goodies.
The event is put together by Hampshire Organic Gardening Group, the Friends of Whitchurch Primary School and Testbourne Community School.
