WHEN Delwyn Jones’ grandmother-in-law told him he was marrying into royalty, he said he thought nothing of it.
But a newspaper clipping recently sent to him by a relative in Scotland has now confirmed the family’s long-held suspicions.
A 200-word article from the Banffshire Journal, published 72 years ago, revealed that Delwyn’s wife Cath is indeed a descendent of James I of Scotland.
The revelation certainly surprised the 87-year-old former miner, who lives with his wife in Wakeford Court, Tadley.
He said: “When we first got married, my wife’s grandmother told us that the Myron family, to which my wife belonged, were related to royalty – but we took this with a pinch of salt.
“It makes me feel quite proud to be honest. I can’t claim it like Cath can, but at least I can tell people that I have married into royalty!”
The 200-word article makes mention of the Myron family lineage and reveals the rich family history of Delwyn’s wife, whose maiden name was Myron.
The article read: “The Myron are a family of no mean origin being lineally and legitimately descended from Jane, grand-daughter of Edward III of England and wife and widow of James I of Scotland.”
Cath, who is now 90, was born in Banffshire, which late became part of Aberdeenshire. She married Delwyn in 1946 when they were both posted at RAF Odiham. They celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on December 15, 2007.
