POPULAR children’s author Andrew Lane was the guest of honour at the official opening of a new-look library at a Basingstoke school.
The 49-year-old is the author behind the Young Sherlock Holmes series and he gave students at The Vyne Community School a talk on the art of penning a novel.
The author’s visit marked the opening of the Vyne Road school’s refurbished library.
The £25,000 overhaul has seen new lighting and shelving installed to create more space and to make it more appealing to students.
Associate headteacher Mark Kingswood said that the revamp was a long-term plan to improve school facilities.
“A priority for our school and our children is increasing the number who read for pleasure and to improve their literacy,” said Mr Kingswood.
“We are pretty pleased with the library. One of the single biggest things that affects students’ motivational behaviour is the appearance of the rooms they are working in.”
Mr Lane was glad to see investment in the library.
He said: “There was a move a few years back when libraries were becoming ‘information hubs’, focusing on Internet access.
“But today there are a lot of kids who love books and reading. Books are an experience that nothing else can give.”
