THE blooming gardens of South Ham and The Berg estate in Basingstoke were in the spotlight in a new competition.
Community group South Ham Direct organised the first South Ham Garden in Bloom to give recognition to householders who show real flower power as well as other green-fingered skills.
And while there had not been a huge number of entries, organiser Barbara Lewis-Mallyon said the contest had been worth setting up.
The 77-year-old, who lives in Shipton Way, said: “We will be doing it next year because everybody was so pleased with it. I love gardening and so do so many people, so I started it to get South Ham working with The Berg.”
The competition was judged by experienced judges from the former Basingstoke in Bloom competition.
First prize and £25 in gardening vouchers went to Pat and Monica Moriarty who impressed with the garden at their home, in Hulbert Way.
Second prize and £15 in vouchers went to Pat Edney and David Bambury, of Brackley Way, third prize and a £10 voucher was won by Joan Allen, from Pitman Close, and Jean and Bill Jeram were highly commended for the garden at their home, in Brackley Way.
