SOME of the UK’s best scooter riders showed youngsters their top tricks to celebrate the arrival of new folding ramps in a north Hampshire village.
The launch of the new ramps at Beech Road Open Space, in Bishops Green, was held on Monday, with riders from Team Extreme, the UK’s only professional team for BMX, skateboard, inline and scooter displays, on hand to help scooter fans perfect their skills.
The project has been run by the Community Youth Project in the village and the ramps have been funded by Greenham Common Trust. Sentinel Housing Assoc-iation provided funds for the special launch event.
Ian Green, youth worker and project manager at the youth project, said: “Originally, we wanted to create a permanent structure, and successfully raised the funds to build a small concrete skate park, following a consultation event which gained support from residents.
“However, we were advised that, due to the close proximity of houses, we would almost certainly have our planning application rejected on the grounds of noise.
“So, as a compromise, we’ve built a dedicated space for young people to use their scooters, and bought some Freshpark folding ramps instead.
“This compromise should help to reduce the problem of children and young people using their scooters and skateboards on the roads.”
The ramps will be available to young people on Monday afternoons and evenings, during the school holidays, and on Wednesday evenings from September when adult volunteers are available to supervise the ramps.
Sarah Smith, Sentinel’s community development manager, said: “We’re delighted to be involved in the launch of youth project’s new skate ramps.
“The ramps are a fantastic addition to the existing facilities at Bishops Green and will give local young people the chance to practise scooter riding and skateboarding skills close to home.”
